For those who celebrate the season, the Christmas season is known as “the most wonderful time of the year”, but it isn’t this way for all of us. Whether you are estranged from family, missing a loved one, managing a major life change, or finding yourself spending more time alone, the holiday season can be a trigger for heavy emotions. So, how can you not only make it through the holidays, but find some enjoyment in them?
Set healthy boundaries with friends and family. Do you find yourself saying yes to a plethora of holiday events? Do you enjoy them, or do they leave you feeling overwhelmed? Reflect on your limits ahead of time to prioritize gatherings that will bring you joy. It’s ok to say no to invites and communicate your boundaries to those around you.
Embrace solitude. If you find yourself spending time alone over the holidays, why not embrace it? Watch your favourite Christmas movie, decorate the way you like, bake and indulge in a good dessert, or pamper yourself with an at-home spa night. Try and shift your focus from being alone to enjoying your own company and doing whatever you like!
Volunteer. Many volunteer organizations could use an extra pair of hands over the holidays. Find one that aligns with your values and offer to help. You may be surprised by how nice it feels to give back to your community.
Start a new tradition. Christmas is known for the traditions that come with it. Decorating the tree, hanging stockings, and setting cookies out for Santa are just a few. If these don’t work for you this year, why not start your own tradition? Would you prefer Chinese food over turkey dinner? What about marking the day with a hike to your favourite spot? Perhaps you light a candle for a loved one who has passed away.
Take yourself on a mini vacation. If you don’t feel like being at home, take yourself on a mini vacation. Is there a place nearby you usually drive past but never visit? Think about booking a hotel room, condo, or cabin for yourself and spend the holidays in a new environment.
Express your emotions. If you feel a lot of emotions coming up during the holidays, try to find a way to express them. Remember, it’s ok to feel the way you do. Reach out to a trusted friend or loved one or write in a journal for a few minutes. Move your body and take yourself out for some fresh air. Connect with a professional if things feel too overwhelming and you would like some support.
We receive a lot of messages about what the holidays are “supposed” to look like, but it’s ok if yours is different. Try and focus on your own care and enjoyment by personalizing the activities and reflecting on how you would like to spend your time.
If you would like some counselling support over the holiday season, please reach out to book a free 15-minute consultation with any of our counsellors. You will receive non-judgemental care and help in designing the best possible holiday for yourself.
