State of the world

With all that is going on in the world, it can be easy to spend large amounts of time online scrolling through information. It’s easy to become overwhelmed with social media, news reports, emails, and constant notifications. While technology has its perks, digital overload can increase feelings of anxiety, stress, and burnout. Taking a break from the digital world, knows as a “digital detox”, can provide a much-needed rest for your mental health and well-being.

However, a digital detox doesn’t have to mean isolating yourself or enduring long periods of disconnection. It can be fun, refreshing, and inspiring. Here are 10 creative and playful ways to unplug and reconnect with yourself.

  1. Host a Technology-Free Day or Weekend
    • Why it helps: Putting away your devices for a full day or weekend can make a huge difference for your mental clarity and stress levels. Instead of being distracted by a constant stream of information, you can truly live in the moment and enjoy what you’re doing.
    • How to Make It Fun: Plan offline activities for the day. This may be a picnic, hike, visit to a museum, or trying a new hobby. If you live with others, make it a challenge to avoid technology for the day and interact with each other without distractions.
  2. Replace Social Media Time with Creative Pursuits
    • Why It Helps: By reducing screen time, you open up your schedule for projects that nurture your creative side. This can help reduce overall stress levels and increase personal fulfillment.
    • How to Make It Fun: Give yourself permission to enjoy an extended amount of time painting, cooking, writing, or playing music. Is there something in your home that would benefit from a DIY treatment? Do you have a project sitting in the corner that could use some attention? Put some time into creative activities that are usually left on the back burner.
  3. Try Analog Alternatives
    • Why It Helps: Analog activities give you a break from blue light emitted by screens. They also promote connection to the self and help you feel more in touch with the present moment.
    • How to Make It Fun: Choose something you haven’t done in a while or have a fond memory of from when you were a kid. Try doing a puzzle, reading a book, playing a board game, or taking a disposable camera out to capture the world around you.
  4. Practice Mindful Walking
    • Why It Helps: Mindful walking helps you connect to the natural world around you. This allows you to release stress, process the day, and clear your mind.
    • How to Make It Fun: Challenge yourself to notice something you would ordinarily miss while distracted by devices. Use your senses to engage fully with your environment. You may even create a scavenger hunt where you try and spot as many birds, animals, or plants as possible.
  5. Have a Screen-Free Social Night
    • Why It Helps: Spending time with friends and family without screens encourages a deeper connection and more meaningful conversations. Creating memories becomes easier, leading to a deeper bond with those around you.
    • How to Make It Fun: Tailor the evening to the interests of those invited. Are your friends really into strategy and gaming? Host a board game night. Does your family enjoy cooking? Host a potluck dinner and share recipes for each of the dishes.
  6. Take a Digital-Free Vacation
    • Why It Helps: If you feel a longer amount of time away from the online world would be helpful, consider a digital-free vacation. This allows you to fully unwind and reset, all while exploring new places.
    • How to Make It Fun: Choose to visit a place which appeals to your travel style. Are you looking for somewhere tropical where you can relax by the pool? Or are you more into adventure travel where you can spend your day burning through heart-racing, action-packed digital-free activities? Wherever you decide to go, communicate your plan to be off devices while you are away and hold firm on your boundaries.
  7. Create a Tech-Free Zone at Home
    • Why It Helps: Labeling spaces in your home as “tech-free” gives you a sanctuary you can visit at any time. This is important if you tend to spend a lot of hours on screens or work from home.
    • How to Make It Fun: Set up a cozy reading nook, meditation space, or craft corner. Create a “no phones allowed” sign to remind yourself that you are stepping away from technology while you are in this space.
  8. Use a “Digital Detox Jar” for Accountability
    • Why It Helps: This can be a motivating and playful way to limit screen time and stick to your detox goals. Use it just for yourself or for your entire household (kids may really like this approach and can be challenged to add their own ideas to the jar).
    • How to Make It Fun: Write down digital detox challenges on slips of paper and add to the jar (Example: “Have a tech-free dinner”, “1 hour of phone-free reading”, “take a walk without checking your phone”). Draw a slip from the jar each week and use it as a guide for your tech-free activity.
  9. Explore the Power of “Silent Retreats”
    • Why It Helps: This may be a more extreme option of unplugging but may offer profound mental health benefits. A silent retreat allows you to connect with yourself, calm your mind, and deepen awareness of your internal experience.
    • How to Make It Fun: You can choose to participate in a facilitated silent retreat where you will be guided through the experience. However, you may also choose to do this at home where you remain silent for a select period of time in order to explore the benefits of this practice.
  10. Start a Digital Detox Challenge with Friends
    • Why It Helps: Challenges are often quite engaging and foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork. You will probably have more fun experimenting with tech-free activities when others are along for the ride.
    • How to Make It Fun: Challenge your friends and family to see who can go the longest without checking their social media or reacting to notifications. Who can do the most offline activities in a week? Who has successfully made a habit of choosing from their digital detox jar? Celebrate each person’s efforts and reflect on how tech-free time feels for each of you.

Taking regular breaks from our screens can help restore balance, strengthen relationships, and improve mental health. By getting creative with offline activities, you can make the experience fun, playful, and rejuvenating. So, take a deep breath, put down your phone, and discover the benefits of a digital detox!
