Kathryn Atkinson

For Kathryn, a deep passion for psychology and a commitment to providing hope to others led to the establishment of Island Clinical Counselling (ICC), a clinic that reflects her values and allows her to work with other clinicians she admires. Kathryn provides support to her own case load of clients while overseeing the work of several practicum students and providing consultation to all members of ICC. She works tirelessly to provide an environment in which everyone can feel valued, safe, and cared for.

For Kathryn, the decision to become a counsellor stemmed from a deeply personal and impactful experience in therapy. “I felt drawn to therapy because my own experience was so positive,” she shares. This firsthand understanding of the benefits counselling can bring to one’s life fueled her desire to help others navigate their mental health struggles. Coupled with her interest in psychology, it was only natural for Kathryn to pursue a career in counselling.

As a clinician, Kathryn is particularly passionate about treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and has received specialized training in this area. “OCD is a debilitating condition, and few people are actually trained in it,” she says. Her love for treating OCD comes from the proven effectiveness of therapeutic techniques. “I love the treatment. It really works when it is applied properly. I love seeing clients feel hopeful once they start the work.”

In her clinical practice, Kathryn relies heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a widely used and well-established approach in mental health treatment. “CBT is my go-to modality. I use it in every session,” she notes. Kathryn makes a point of creating a lot of space for clients to share their experience but also offers concrete strategies that can be applied to daily life outside of the session. While Kathryn works diligently to provide guidance and support, she believes she grows alongside the individuals she treats. “I learn much more from clients than they learn from me,” she states.

Originally from Vancouver, Kathryn had a diverse career before landing in the world of mental health. “Before studying psychology, I studied film!” she shares, recalling a time when she immersed herself in the creative world. Today, when she’s not at the clinic, Kathryn enjoys spending quality time with her husband, young son, and their family cat.

As a clinic director, Kathryn understands the importance of creating a professional, supportive, and positive workplace. This philosophy extends to the entire clinic, where open communication and mutual respect create a work environment that empowers both counsellors and clients. Kathryn is an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, and offers guidance and support to practicum students who are just starting out in the field. Many of these students have stayed with Island Clinical Counselling after graduation and continue to engage in the supportive and collaborative space Kathryn has created.

With the original clinic located in downtown Nanaimo, Kathryn has now expanded Island Clinical Counselling to serve clients in the north end of Nanaimo, Duncan, and Port Alberni. A new Parksville office will open on May 1, providing support to clients living in the Oceanside communities. As the clinic continues to expand, she remains deeply committed to fostering meaningful connections with both clients and colleagues, stating that “building relationships with others, providing hope to those who feel hopeless, and connecting with other practitioners” are the aspects of the job that bring her the most fulfillment.
