In this Q&A, we’re excited to introduce you to one of our compassionate and insightful counsellors, Farnaz. With a deep background in communication, a gift for human connection, and a love for four-legged co-therapists, she brings a warm and integrative approach to her practice. Read on to learn more about her journey, what drives her, and how a cat in a backpack became part of her regular routine.
What inspired you to become a counsellor?
I’ve always been passionate about building meaningful connections, truly listening to people, and helping them navigate life’s challenges. Every person has a story, and every story deserves to be heard. After spending 15 years in communications and government relations—where understanding, empathy, and strategic support were key—I wanted to carry these important skills into counselling. Helping people find clarity and resilience has always been at the heart of my work; now, I have the privilege of doing so in a more personal and transformative way.
Are there particular mental health challenges you’re especially passionate about supporting?
There are many aspects of mental health that interest me, but I’m most passionate about helping people find their “glimmers”—those moments when they can see beyond their trauma, pain, grief, and shame to find hope or joy, even if just for a moment. People are far stronger than they often realize; sometimes, they just need a gentle reminder.
What therapeutic approaches do you find most effective in your work with clients?
I take an integrative approach, tailoring treatments to each individual rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all model. I draw from a range of modalities, including somatic approaches, ACT, CBT, EMDR, DBT, and Trauma-Informed Care, among others, to create a truly person-centred experience. While a single modality can provide a solid foundation, real growth happens through flexibility, adaptation, and meeting clients where they are.
Do you incorporate any unique or lesser-known elements into your therapy sessions?
Yes! I offer animal-assisted therapy. I adopted a cat with Cerebellar Hypoplasia from my practicum site—he had a rough start in life but is now the most patient, affectionate, and entertaining furball you’ll ever meet. He also thinks he’s a lapdog, much like my therapy doodle, Porscha!
What has your work as a counsellor taught you—about others or even about yourself?
As a counsellor, I have been incredibly moved by the courage and strength it takes for clients to be vulnerable. It’s not easy to open up, yet time and time again, I witness the resilience of those willing to do the hard work. I’ve also been surprised by the role humour plays in the healing process—sometimes, a well-timed laugh can break the tension, create connection, and remind us that even in the midst of struggle, there’s room for lightness. So, it’s a privilege to walk alongside clients as they navigate their journeys, finding moments of strength, hope, and even laughter along the way.
Can you tell us a bit about where you grew up and how that shaped who you are today?
I was born in Persia (Iran) and grew up on air force bases during an active war. Life was anything but ordinary, but my parents did their best to bring a sense of normalcy and joy into our daily routines. I had pet chickens and ducks roaming the base, and some of my earliest memories involve sitting in the control tower, wearing oversized headphones, talking to my father mid-flight as he and his squadron practiced aerial combat. I know this wasn’t a typical childhood, but it was my normal. Today, I’m profoundly grateful that my family and I are safe and have called Canada home for over 30 years.
Outside of counselling, what brings you joy or helps you recharge?
Does napping count as a hobby? If so, I’d like to list that first! My partner has four incredibly active kids, ranging from elementary to high school, all of whom are athletes. So, I’m the proud parent in the stands, cheering them on at tournaments and games. When we’re not at sporting events, we love hiking with our two doodles and our cat—who, yes, travels in a special cat backpack. I fully embrace my role as that pet parent.
And when I’m not doing any of the above, I love bringing a little joy and laughter to those around me by embracing and releasing my inner child.
