Finding the right counsellor can feel overwhelming, especially when finances are a concern. That’s why we’re excited to introduce David, a dedicated intern counsellor currently offering pay what you can sessions to help make mental health care more accessible for everyone.
Guided by Curiosity and Compassion
Originally from Squamish, BC, David grew up surrounded by natural beauty and a close-knit community. Now based in Victoria, he brings a unique combination of personal insight and professional experience to his counselling practice.
“I was drawn to counselling because I wanted a career where I could use both my knowledge and lived experiences to help people navigate and resolve their own challenges,” he explains. “I’ve also always been incredibly interested in people, personalities, and consciousness, so studying psychology and then counselling felt like the natural path to take.”
A Focus on ADHD, Trauma, and Addictions
With a personal diagnosis of ADH (ADHD), David understands the real-world impact of neurodiversity. But his passion doesn’t stop there. He has spent over a decade working in the non-profit sector, supporting marginalized communities, many of whom have faced trauma and addiction.
“Over the years so many amazing people facing difficult experiences have left strong impressions on me and I resonate strongly with others facing similar challenges,” he shares.
An Integrative and Flexible Approach
Drawing from solution-focused brief therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and feminist therapy, David adapts his approach to each client’s needs. While he works primarily through traditional talk therapy, he also welcomes clients to take breaks outdoors during sessions, allowing space to pause, reflect, and reconnect. “I’m a big supporter of taking a short walk or an outdoor break for fresh air if anyone wants some time to sit quietly with their emotions or would like a break to gather their thoughts.”
Making Mental Health Care More Accessible: Sliding Scale Counselling
As an intern counsellor, David is currently offering sessions at a reduced rate or on a pay what you can basis as part of Island Clinical Counselling’s internship program. Sessions are $70 or lower with an application to the pay what you can program. This model is designed to lower financial barriers and provide access to care for those who might not otherwise be able to afford it.
More Than a Counsellor
When he’s not working, David enjoys paddle boarding, gaming, going to the beach, spa days, movie nights, and spending time with friends and family. He’s also a lover of spontaneous road trips and global travel.
But the heart of his work lies in the relationships he builds.
“The best thing about his job is easily all the people I meet,” he says. “I love meeting new clients and hearing all about their stories, passions, and goals.”
If you’re looking for a thoughtful, down-to-earth counsellor who truly listens, and you’re navigating financial barriers, David may be the right fit for you. He currently works with individuals ages 7 and up, families, and couples. Sessions are held at our Duncan location or online.
