We recognize that neurodivergent individuals are not disordered, but often navigate environments that are not designed for them. Our approach focuses on:
- Strength-based support
- Self-understanding and acceptance
- Adapting environments rather than “fixing” individuals

Meet Our Clinic Director
Kathryn Atkinson, Clinic Director

I have been working in the field of mental health since 2010, with a focus on helping individuals and families navigate anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) using evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). As the Clinic Director of Island Clinical Counselling, I am passionate about ensuring clients receive thoughtful, high-quality care by leading and supporting our team of clinicians through supervision, consultation, and ongoing training. My role also includes helping clients connect with the therapist who is the best fit for their needs. My background includes working with children, youth, adults, couples, and families, with additional training in autism, sleep disorders (including insomnia), and parent-based approaches such as the SPACE program. I also support concerns related to trauma, depression, tics and Tourette’s, ARFID, and life transitions. In addition to my clinical work, I provide supervision and consultation to other counsellors and have taught at both undergraduate and graduate levels. I am an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors and hold a Clinical Supervision Certificate from the University of Ottawa. I am also actively involved in the community, supporting local counselling initiatives. I volunteer with Nanaimo Family Life to support their counsellors and I am on the Board of Directors at Nanaimo’s Child Development Centre.
