Brittany Hesketh
Are you feeling overwhelmed by trauma, anxiety, family challenges, neurodiversity, relationship difficulties, or patterns that seem difficult to change?
I have over 15 years of experience working with adults, children, teens, and families. As a Senior Clinician at Island Clinical Counselling, I am passionate about providing creative and safe mental health supports within an honest, respectful, and attuned presence for my clients. Clients find my nurturing approach alongside them to be supportive, while they create meaningful change by connecting to themselves and others. I understand that human beings are complex with many layers that influence their beliefs, values and behavioural patterns – for example, family systems, culture and society all contribute to shaping our views of self and others. My job is to be curious with clients, help them gain insights into their problems by understanding what contributes to them, and then help them learn how to take the necessary steps to make meaningful shifts toward positive change. Whether you are seeking counselling to work through past experiences or to deal with current circumstances, I can support you in reaching your goals. In addition to individual counselling, I support Nanaimo Family Life by facilitating group supervision for their counsellors. I also offer clinical supervision.
Congratulations on taking the first step towards your healing process. I understand the courage it takes to reach out to someone and open up about the challenges you are facing, and I would be honoured to be a part of your journey. When a child is struggling, the entire family feels it.
Master of Counselling Psychology, Honours B.A. in Psychology, Early Childhood Educator
I offer counselling to children, teens, parents, caregivers, siblings, and families. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist in BC, an ADHD Clinical Services Provider, an End-of-Life Doula, and a member of the BC Play Therapy Association.
My therapeutic approach is evidence-based, individualized, and guided by the client’s needs. In sessions, I blend evidence-informed strategies with a compassionate, practical, and conversational style. Sessions are grounded in a family-systems truth that when one family member grows, the whole family rises with them.
I have extensive experience working alongside neurodiverse children, teens, and adults, including those with ADHD, Autism, learning differences, trauma, and sensory needs. I recently completed training to become an ADHD Clinical Services Provider.
In one-on-one sessions, I strive to create a therapeutic environment where every individual feels understood, respected, and celebrated for who they are. My goal is to offer tools that are realistic and help people feel more confident in navigating emotional regulation, behaviour challenges, work and school stress, grief and loss, and complex family dynamics.
With children, I combine play therapy, sand tray therapy, art therapy, somatic therapy, DBT, and narrative therapy in sensory safe sessions. With adults, I draw on CBT, DBT, somatic therapy, narrative therapy, grief and loss counselling, as well as generational trauma and burnout recovery strategies.
With families, my goal is to support children and parents in building confidence, strengthening communication, and navigating challenging behaviours without shame or judgment. Whether a family is seeking support with emotional regulation, school challenges, sibling dynamics, or everyday stress, I offer tools that are realistic, affirming, and tailored to each family’s unique needs.
When needed, I focus on elevating the voices of children and caregivers within the community. I frequently liaise with schools, MCFD, medical professionals, and community agencies as an advocate and support.
I have lived experience as an adult with ADHD and am a parent of children with diverse needs. I have navigated the complexities of academic, medical, and therapeutic systems as both a parent and a professional.
In the fall of 2026, I will be pursuing a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The focus of my thesis is understanding the impact of childhood diagnoses on parenting and how to better support the well-being of all family members when a developmental or medical diagnosis is made.

Have you spent years surviving difficult experiences and are finally ready to focus on your own healing?
If you’re looking for a therapist to truly meet you where you’re at with validation and empathy, please reach out. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). My approach is flexible and integrative, adapting to your needs and situation, considering bio-psycho-socio-spiritual influences on your life and wellbeing. Together, we will balance support and processing with skills and resource enhancement, tailored to you and your goals. Working with children and youth, I adjust for their stage of development through play, activity and age-appropriate talk strategies.
I was “raised” as a counsellor in trauma-informed, intersectional, feminist theory, which remains with me in my prioritization of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship, efforts to level the power differential between therapist and client and acknowledgment of client wisdom, strength and expertise on their own experience. If you are curious about how VR therapy might support you or your child in managing fear or anxiety, please book a free consult to explore this option.
I incorporate leading trauma therapies, including cognitive processing therapy, trauma-focused CBT, and EMDR, which uses visual, auditory, or tactile dual attention stimulation to support trauma processing.
I have a special interest in supporting individuals and couples through fertility challenges, pregnancy, postpartum mental health, and parenthood. My graduate research focused on the impact of fertility-related stress on individuals and couples.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Sometimes all you know is that something needs to change.
When we are thinking about starting therapy, we don’t always know what we want; we just know we want change and are curious about our own potential. My approach supports this curiosity and allows us to come together to clarify your goals and navigate how we get there.
My hope is that through our work, you gain deeper self-understanding, confidence in managing distress, and/or align your life more closely with your values. This might include gaining insight into your emotions, strengthening relationships, or letting go of patterns that no longer serve you.
I am a registered social worker with over 12 years of experience in mental health, eating disorders, substance use, trauma, grief and loss. I also recognize my culture and identities may differ from those of my clients, and I strive to create safety through open dialogue about differences, values, and accessibility needs. I am very happy to be working alongside the team at Island Clinical Counselling, and welcome any opportunity to connect to see if we are a good fit.

Cole Schafer

If you’re stuck, it probably means you’ve been thinking about the problem in the same way for a long time.
Hello and welcome. If you’re reading this, you are making a choice to improve your life, and I am here to help. I have 8 years of clinical experience, am a proud father, and a dedicated husband. I offer talk and somatic therapy, and life planning.
In a first session, my hope is to identify something you can do to improve your life as soon as possible. Often, especially if you are new to counselling, this requires a lot of talking. Fortunately, I’m a good, bordering on great, listener. If you’re stuck, that means you’re thinking about your issue in the same way. Talking with another person who is deeply listening allows new ideas to emerge. From these, we collaborate on an action. If you pay attention to the results, you will move towards something better.
If you are interested in couples or family sessions, this work is close to my heart. For parents, the best way to support your children is to become the best you. Our intimate relationships should improve over time. If they are not, it’s likely because we are avoiding something – often short-term conflict. Avoiding (sort of) works in the present by sacrificing the future. Not a good idea. Remember, the amount of distress, dread, and hopelessness we may feel is proportionate to the relief and growth we can gain if we become brave enough to speak truthfully. Plus, we gain humility and connection by asking for help.
I work with all genders, but I have a particular specialty in working with men. Personally, I have found it difficult to find other males who embody healthy masculinity. Most of the men I speak to share this experience. I’m here to offer encouragement and direction for men. You can have the adventure of your life if you take the responsibility of your life and humble yourself enough to ask for help when needed.
If you have some experience with therapy and are finding talk therapy limiting, or want to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, I also offer Hakomi. Hakomi is a nourishment-based somatic approach to assisted self-discovery. Through mindfulness practices, we listen to the body to explore and integrate our unconscious, with the intention of becoming whole. We all need support in asking for and receiving our souls’ deepest needs.
Thank you for accepting the responsibility of your life. I can promise it’s worth doing so for you and everyone you care about.
Areas of Focus:
- Hakomi (mindfulness-based, body-centered assisted self-study)
- Family Therapy & Parenting
- Couples Therapy/Relationship Issues
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Mental health for all genders, with an additional specialty in male-identifying clients

Healing often begins when we feel safe enough to share our story.
Hi, my name is Melissa, and I’m excited to be joining the team at ICC.
Sometimes life can feel heavy, uncertain, or isolating. Reaching out for support takes courage and vulnerability, but it also opens the door for growth and change.
I became a counsellor so that I could provide a safe place for others to share their struggles. Having one safe person in our life who will listen with compassion and without judgment can make all the difference.
As a counsellor, my goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where healing can unfold organically. I draw upon both evidence-based therapies and mind–body practices to support my clients effectively, while creating a therapeutic relationship rooted in connection, empathy and care.

On the surface everything looks fine. You are doing what you need to do to take care of yourself and those around you. Underneath, you may feel angry, exhausted, alone, or overwhelmed by responsibilities that never seem to end. You know something needs to change, but you’re not sure where to start.I work with capable, hardworking people who are used to handling problems on their own. Together, we clarify the person you want to be, develop the skills needed to get there, and keep moving forward when life gets difficult. My work is practical and grounded. I use Solution-Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help people get clear on what matters, notice what’s already helping, and make changes that fit real life, not an ideal version of it. The focus is on responsibility, flexibility, and forward movement, without shame or overthinking. Many of the people I work with are used to handling problems on their own.Reaching out for support can feel uncomfortable. Real change requires honesty about what isn’t working and commitment to building something better. You don’t need to have all the answers before getting started. “I have a special interest in helping people move beyond survival mode and reconnect with themselves, their relationships, and the life they want to create.”
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. Since beginning my practice in 2019, I have supported individuals, couples, and teens through a wide range of emotional, relational, and life challenges, helping clients move from places of overwhelm, disconnection, and survival into greater clarity, resilience, connection, well-being, and alignment with their true selves.
My approach to therapy is compassionate, collaborative, attachment-focused, and trauma-informed. I believe that healing happens in safe, supportive relationships and that clients already possess the inner capacity for growth, healing, and meaningful change. One of my strengths as a counsellor is bringing presence, compassion, and attunement into the therapeutic relationship so clients can feel supported as they navigate difficult experiences and emotions.
I integrate a variety of evidence-based and holistic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), somatic approaches, mindfulness-based practices, compassion-focused therapy, parts work, and nervous system regulation. I also offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), an eye-movement-based trauma-processing approach similar to EMDR that can help clients process distressing experiences in a gentle and effective way.
I view therapy as a collaborative and individualized process. We begin by creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where you can slow down, explore your experiences with curiosity and compassion, and better understand the underlying patterns contributing to your current struggles. Together, we identify the different layers that may be getting in the way of your authentic self fully shining through, including unprocessed emotions and memories, nervous system responses, limiting beliefs, attachment wounds, and relational patterns that no longer serve you.
From there, we collaboratively determine which therapeutic approaches feel most supportive for your healing journey so that change can happen as safely and effectively as possible. As these layers begin to resolve, many clients naturally experience a stronger connection to themselves, greater emotional regulation, increased confidence, deeper self-trust, and more clarity around relationships, purpose, and the direction they want their lives to take.
I offer in-person counselling sessions in downtown Nanaimo on Mondays, as well as virtual sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I also offer free consultations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I offer direct billing to:

Sometimes words aren’t enough, and sometimes they’re exactly what you need. Music therapy offers another way in.
Hi, I’m Christine. I’m a Music Therapist Accredited (MTA) and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) (RP(Q)). I’m currently working towards the Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) accreditation. I bring something a little different to the Island Clinical Counselling team: the integration of music and psychotherapy.
You might come to therapy knowing exactly what you want to work on, or you might just know that something feels off. Either way, I’m here to meet you where you are. I offer music therapy, psychotherapy, or an integrative blend of both, depending on your needs and preferences. No musical experience is required to work with me.
Music is a powerful therapeutic tool that can give voice to grief, soothe anxiety, and open doors that conversation alone sometimes can’t. Music therapy can involve listening, improvising, songwriting, or simply letting sound create space for reflection. When we use talk therapy, I bring the same creative, attuned presence to our conversations. We’ll find what works for you.
Whether we’re using words, music, or both, I strive to create a collaborative, authentic, and non-pathologizing space where healing and personal growth can happen. My work is grounded in humanistic, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive values, and I draw from music psychotherapy, narrative therapy, psychodynamic, and emotion-focused approaches.
I support adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, grief, palliative or life-limiting illness, aphasia, self-esteem, and life transitions. Whether you’re processing grief, rebuilding self-esteem, managing the stress of life’s ups and downs, or simply wanting space for creative exploration and emotional healing, I’m here to support you.
If something in this profile resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you. I offer a free 15-minute consultation to help us determine if we’re a good fit.

- Anxiety
- Depression and Mood Concerns
- Grief and Loss
- Stress and Burnout
- Palliative and Life-Limiting Illness

Life’s challenges don’t happen in isolation, and neither does healing.
Hello! I am grateful for this opportunity to work alongside the amazing group of clinicians at Island Clinical Counselling located in the unceded and traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. I am a counselling intern with the team.
Counselling allows a special opportunity to be witness to the lives of others. I am committed to this work in the spirit of compassion and with respect and curiosity. My approach is holistic, trauma informed and culturally sensitive. I believe in the importance of understanding the context of one’s experience and respect that each individual lives within a system that influences their well-being. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is essential for creating a safe space for people to share what is authentic and meaningful and for people to be seen and heard.
I began my career as a child and youth care worker because I wanted to help those who felt they didn’t have a voice. Listening, being present and witnessing a person’s story involves walking alongside and guiding attention and awareness. I believe there is potential within everyone for healing. I love watching people come alive, shining their uniqueness and shared humanity. Since completing my master’s degree, I have been working in community-based settings, with the local health authority and in post secondary education through direct counselling roles, teaching and in leadership positions related to counselling services for couples, children, youth and families. I am currently a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and working towards further certification.

Angus Valleau
Not everyone wants to sit in a room and talk about their feelings—and that’s okay.
Hi there! My name is Angus Valleau.
I am happy to be working with the Island Clinical Counselling team as a Canadian Certified Counsellor. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and my Master’s in Clinical Counselling.
I have extensive experiencing working with both children and adults many of whom are neurodiverse. My approach is inclusive, and I aim to reduce stigma that sometimes surrounds mental health and related challenges. I strongly believe in treating others with “unconditional positive regard,” which means trusting the best in people and respecting different perspectives and ways of being.
In my practice, I follow a trauma-informed approach and often use cognitive-based modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but I also incorporate other techniques from modalities such as Emotion-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and systemic-based approaches.
A Note on Movement:
Not everyone is comfortable talking about their feelings or experiences, and that’s okay. There are many ways to support mental health, including movement-based approaches like dance, expressive arts, or somatic therapies. These methods can help you connect with your body and mind without requiring a lot of talking about difficult topics. Physical movement and mental health are closely linked. Even if your main focus is on cognitive-emotional wellbeing, learning about how your body moves and responds can be very helpful. Sometimes, understanding your body’s responses—like feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, or even excitement—can help you stay more balanced during stressful moments.
Remember, there is no one right way to do therapy. Everyone is different, and I believe in offering options that best suit your needs. I look forward to seeing you at Island Clinical Counselling!

Healing begins when we feel safe enough to share our story with someone who listens with empathy, curiosity, and compassion.
I am originally from Estonia, a small Northern European country known for its innovation and rich history. Its capital, Tallinn, is home to a beautiful medieval Old Town, and Estonia is also one of the most digitally advanced societies in the world, where many everyday services—such as taxes, healthcare, and even voting—can be done entirely online. Growing up there shaped my appreciation for adaptability and meaningful communication.
Today, I feel grateful to call Canada home, and I truly value the warmth and kindness I have experienced here.
I hold a Master’s degree in Psychology and am currently completing supervised hours toward registration as a Registered Clinical Councellor in BC. After moving to Canada, I spent several years working with youth on the autism spectrum. This experience has been deeply meaningful and has strengthened my ability to approach each person with patience, understanding, and respect for their unique way of experiencing the world.
As a therapist, I strive to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where clients feel truly heard. I approach my work with empathy, curiosity, and compassion, and I am passionate about supporting people as they navigate challenges, build self-awareness, and move toward meaningful change in their lives.
Outside of my professional work, I enjoy cooking and baking, spending time with friends, and exploring nature through walks and hikes. I also love quiet moments curled up on the couch with a good book and a cup of tea.

Is technology helping you live your life—or slowly taking it over?
I am a counselling student at Island Clinical Counselling working with youth (11+), adults, parents, couples, and families. My approach is warm, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and focused on helping clients understand their emotional patterns and behaviours while developing practical tools for meaningful change.
I also specialize in digital wellness, including video gaming disorder (VGD), problematic smartphone use (PSU), and social media overuse. Digital habits often start as ways to manage stress or emotional pain but can easily become their own challenge through reinforced reward cycles, avoidance, and identity-based rewards. My work helps clients understand both the underlying needs as well as the behavioural habits and biopsychosocial drives that keep them feeling stuck.
Technology-related addictions often reveal deeper concerns such as anxiety, trauma, perfectionism, identity challenges, or neurodiversity. When issues fall outside my scope—such as body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, or concerns requiring medical, psychiatric, physiotherapy, or occupational therapy involvement—I collaborate with and refer to appropriate specialists while continuing to support the client’s emotional wellbeing. Below are the areas I work with directly.

Shannon Heppner
When you’ve spent years being the strong one, it can be difficult to know when it’s time to ask for support yourself.
Hi, my name is Shannon Heppner (she/they). I am a counselling intern at Island Clinical Counselling in Nanaimo. I will be taking on clients and offering counselling in the community starting in January. My approach is holistic, warm, trauma-informed, strength- and resilience-focused, an affirming and safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodiversity-affirming, with a lens on understanding thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to create meaningful shifts that affect change.
I also have 20+ years of experience in frontline work as a responder and rescue specialist. This first-hand work and education gave me a deep understanding of the trauma and resilience effects frontline workers face, and when it is time to reach out. You are not alone.
When I am not working, I am continuously learning through education and connection. I love connecting with my family and friends, hiking and exploring in all weather, kayaking, boating and fishing, walking my dog and or meditating.
I originally came from Powell River. In this nature-robust small coastal community, I spent most of my time working and playing in the bush or on the water. Eventually, I started my career as a rescue specialist for the Canadian Coast Guard, which brought me to Vancouver Island. I got my Community Mental Health Worker Certificate and had the opportunity to work alongside people who lived with barriers to housing, mental health, substance use and brain injury. Working alongside these folks drew on my curiosity about how I can do more to support people and the barriers that sometimes come with being human. I attended Vancouver Island University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care. From there, I was able to work alongside teens and children in the schools, as well as their families in the community and nature. I am currently completing my Master’s in Counselling through City University of Seattle.

Kate Connolly
Sometimes life changes in ways we never expected, and we’re left trying to make sense of who we are now.
Welcome, I’m Kate, a counselling graduate student at the University of Victoria. I have nearly ten years of experience in the mental health field, and in that time, I’ve come to deeply admire the innate capacity people have to heal, adapt, and create meaning in their lives. I offer counselling for individuals, children, and couples (of all genders and orientations), and I always aim to create a space that feels safe, compassionate, and authentic.
Much of my work focuses on supporting individuals through major life transitions, including loss, relationship changes, and shifts in identity. My goal is to create a space where clients can gently explore the most difficult parts of their experiences, discover meaning within them, and reconnect with the strengths and values that guide them toward a more meaningful future.
At the heart of my approach is a belief in the healing power of self-exploration and self-compassion. These practices can help us move through life with greater ease, resilience, and a deeper sense of contentment. When we are able to gently look at all parts of ourselves—and allow them to be safely seen by others—we often find more freedom to make conscious choices about how we want to live.
A quote that informs my work:
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
— Carl Rogers
It would be an honour to walk alongside you for a little while.
A little about me: outside of the therapy office, I can usually be found at my house in the woods—helping my exasperated German shepherd herd cats, children and chickens.

Finding the right counselling fit matters, and I encourage you to take the time you need to explore who feels right for you. If that happens to be me, I look forward to meeting you and working together to support your goals.
In our sessions, we’ll focus on building a trusting therapeutic relationship where you can share openly in a safe, confidential space and at a pace that feels comfortable for you. This is your time – a place to explore what feels overwhelming, make sense of your experiences, and discover a new direction or insight about yourself.
I practice from a person-centred approach and value authenticity and genuineness in the work we do together. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported while we explore what matters most to you.
In session, I integrate evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, narrative and solution-focused strategies. Depending on your needs, we can draw from these perspectives or others to help you understand patterns, build new skills, and move towards meaningful change.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in child and youth care and have 24 years of experience working with children, youth, and families. I work with all ages 10 and above. I value diversity and recognize that each of us brings our own background, values, and life experiences into the therapeutic space. Even if we share similarities, we may experience them differently, and I honour those differences in our work together.
In my spare time, I enjoy nature, photography, reading books and spending time with my family and enjoy others with a good sense of humour.

Sabrina St. Mars
Are you carrying grief, navigating a difficult transition, adjusting to parenthood, struggling with anxiety or depression, or longing for a space where you can simply be heard without judgment?
I am honoured to be offering services as a student practitioner while completing the final stages of a master’s degree in counselling. I believe in the inherent dignity and worth of all people, and that every individual deserves to be listened to with empathy and respect. I am committed to providing a safe, warm, and non-judgmental space where you can experience being seen and heard. My approach to therapy is collaborative and adaptable, recognising that you have strengths, values, abilities, insights and preferences that should shape the direction of counselling. Therapy is not “one size fits all”, and I hope to develop a therapeutic relationship founded on authenticity, where you are comfortable sharing what is and is not working, and we can adjust accordingly. If this sounds like a good fit, it would be an honour to meet you and hear your story.

Karin Kronstal

Hi, I’m Karin (she/her). I am in the final stages of my Master of Counselling at City University of Seattle and am currently completing my practicum hours toward becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). I am delighted to offer affordable counselling services at Island Clinical Counselling. Beginning in October 2026, I will be seeing clients in person or virtually on Fridays at the downtown Nanaimo office.
I enjoy working with people who are navigating seasons of transition. Whether you’re facing a career change, a health journey, shifts in religious identity, the loss of a relationship, or moving into parenthood, change can be overwhelming. Therapy can provide an opportunity to reflect on these shifts in identity and help you move forward with greater clarity. I also welcome individuals and couples who are looking to strengthen their relationships.
My approach is collaborative, curious, and grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. I draw primarily from Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Relational Life Therapy, adapting my approach to your unique goals, values, and lived experience. I identify as a cisgender, heterosexual woman, and I welcome the opportunity to work with people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
People often describe me as easy to talk to and someone who asks thoughtful questions. As your counsellor, I would aim to create a space where you feel respected, understood, and supported as we explore the challenges that have brought you to therapy. I recognize the lasting impact that trauma can have on people’s lives and strive to work in ways that are both compassionate and trustworthy. My hope is that our sessions feel like a place where you can show up honestly and feel genuinely heard.
In addition to my current studies, I hold a Master of Community Planning from Dalhousie University and a Conflict Coaching certificate from the Justice Institute of BC. In my free time, you can find me running on trails, teaching spin classes or spending time with my family.
